How to Descale a Bosch Washing Machine: What Bosch Says, the Steps, and What Dubai Water Changes
Descaling a Bosch washing machine, as Bosch describes it, takes four moves: empty the drum, put the whole pack of Bosch descaler in the drum, run a 60 °C programme with no pre-wash, and run the same programme again without the powder to clear the residue. Bosch UK gives those steps. Bosch Singapore gives the first three. Bosch UAE gives none of them. Its pages say how often to descale, name a product, and warn you off citric acid.
That gap is the reason for this page. Owners in Dubai search for the steps, find them on a UK page, and then wonder whether they apply here, how much to use, how often to do it, and whether vinegar or citric acid is a fair substitute. We read the Bosch pages from the UAE, the UK, Singapore, Ireland, Malta, South Africa, Egypt, New Zealand, Australia and the US, plus the manuals for two machines. We set out what each says, where they disagree, and where the sources stop.
We repair Bosch appliances. We are an independent company and not an authorised Bosch agent, and nothing here replaces the booklet for your model code. Where a step comes from a country other than the UAE, we name the country.
At a glance
- The steps: empty drum, the entire contents of the Bosch descaler into the drum, a 60 °C programme with pre-wash off, run to the end. Bosch UK adds a second run without the powder. (Bosch UK and Singapore.)
- How often: Bosch UAE says every 3 months on two pages and once a year on a third. Bosch UK and Singapore say every 3 to 6 months. Bosch New Zealand says every 6 months. Ireland, Malta, South Africa and Australia say every 3 months.
- What not to use: citric acid, vinegar and other acid products. The Bosch UAE, Singapore, Egypt and US pages all say so.
- A limescale filter: Bosch UAE says Bosch does not offer one for washing machines.
- Whether you need it: the manual for the WAB28060GB says descaling "should not be necessary" with correct detergent dosing. Bosch's own advice therefore points two ways.
- If E19 is on the display: do not run a descale as a fix. See our E19 guide.
Do you need to descale at all?
Bosch's pages say to descale at a regular interval, and one of its manuals says you may not have to. Both are Bosch statements, so it is worth setting them side by side.
The regular-interval view
The Bosch UAE, UK, Singapore, Ireland, Malta, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and US pages all treat descaling as routine care. The Bosch US page says limescale and hard water deposits can form in the machine, and that it can build up quickly, "especially in hard water areas". Bosch UK adds a reason that has a cost attached: limescale on the heating element reduces its effectiveness, and the element may eventually need replacing by a Bosch engineer.
The "should not be necessary" view
The manual for the WAB28060GB, a Bosch front loader we read while researching our detergent guide, says that with correct dosing of detergent, descaling should not be necessary. It points to Bosch's website or after-sales service for suitable descalers if it is needed. We have only that one manual with that wording, and we cannot say it appears in every Bosch manual.
Reading the two together
Our reading, not Bosch's, is that the manual is describing a machine washed with the right amount of detergent in soft or moderately hard water, and the web pages are describing a routine for owners who cannot be sure of either. The Bosch pages from Ireland, Malta, South Africa and New Zealand say how often you should descale "depends on how hard the water is and the detergent used", which supports that reading. It also means the interval on the page is a starting point.
For a Dubai household this leaves a practical question: what is the hardness at your tap, and are you dosing correctly? We come to the first in the water section below. The second is covered by our detergent guide, which sets out Bosch's dosing tables and the i-DOS figures.
What we would do
If your machine is new, you dose to the instructions and your water is soft, descaling on Bosch's longest interval is easy to defend. If you have never descaled in three years, or you see white crust on the door seal or the drawer, an earlier descale is reasonable. These are our suggestions, and Bosch does not give a rule for the choice.
What limescale does inside a washing machine
Bosch's pages name one consequence of limescale in a washing machine, and it is the one that matters to a repairer: the heating element.
The element
Bosch UK says limescale on the heating element reduces its effectiveness and may eventually require the element to be replaced. Bosch Singapore says the same: limescale can reduce the element's heating effectiveness, and a full replacement may follow. Both pages stop there. They do not say how long it takes, how thick the scale has to be, or which machines are affected.
This ties to the heating code. Bosch's pages for E19 and F19 say "heating time exceeded" and give no cause, while its UK and Singapore pages on a machine that is not heating name the heating element. Our E19 guide sets out what each page says. It does not follow from any Bosch page that scale causes E19, and we do not claim it does. What we can say from our own visits is that a scaled element is one of the things a technician looks for when a machine stops heating.
What the pages say about the rest of the machine
The Bosch US page mentions deposits in general. The Bosch Egypt, Singapore and US pages are more concerned with what not to put in the machine than with where the scale goes. We found no Bosch page that lists the pump, the valves or the drum bearing as places scale does damage. We will not add to the list.
What you cannot see
The element sits behind the outer drum, with the temperature sensor, and carries mains voltage. You cannot check it by looking. That is why a cleaning routine on a calendar, which Bosch recommends, has more value than waiting for a symptom.
Signs people mention, and how much weight they carry
Owners tell us about white flecks on dark laundry, a crust around the drawer, and cycles that run longer. None of these is a Bosch-listed sign of limescale. The Bosch US page we read lists no signs. Take them as prompts to check your detergent dose and your routine, not as a diagnosis.
How often: Bosch's pages do not agree
Bosch's pages disagree on the interval, sometimes within one country. We list each source below. We do not pick one.
| Bosch site | What it says | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| UAE, limescale filter page | Descale every three months with the Bosch quick descaler, product 00311920 | Calls it the most cost effective solution |
| UAE, prevent limescale page | Descale every 3 months with the Bosch tested descaler | Use sufficient detergent |
| UAE, citric acid page | Use the descaler "once a year" | Same page says "Avoid using citric acid!" |
| UK | "Every three to six months" | Steps given |
| Singapore | "Three to six months" | Steps given |
| Ireland | Cleaner every 3 months | Depends on water hardness and detergent |
| Malta | Cleaner every 3 months | Depends on water hardness and detergent |
| South Africa | Cleaner every 3 months | Depends on water hardness and detergent |
| New Zealand | Quick Descaler every 6 months | Depends on water hardness and detergent |
| Australia | Descale every 3 months with the Bosch tested cleaner | Use sufficient detergent and follow the detergent maker's dosage |
| US | "Every few months" | No number given |
The UAE conflict
Two Bosch UAE pages say every three months and a third says once a year. We cannot tell you which the company means. All three are public pages for the same market. If you need a single answer for a warranty or a service plan, ask Bosch Customer Service which interval applies to your model, and note the answer.
A way to choose
One option is to read the range as three months for hard water and a year for soft. We cannot support that from the pages, since only Ireland, Malta, South Africa and New Zealand tie the interval to hardness and none says which interval goes with which hardness.
Another option is a middle path of every six months, which sits inside the UK and Singapore range and matches New Zealand. It is not a Bosch recommendation for Dubai.
What it costs to follow each interval
The pack count is simple arithmetic, and it depends on one assumption the Gulf pages do not confirm: that one pack is one application, as the UK and Singapore steps describe it. On that assumption:
| Interval | Applications a year |
|---|---|
| Every 3 months | 4, which is one four-pack, the "economical pack" the UAE pages mention |
| Every 6 months | 2 |
| Once a year | 1 |
We do not quote prices, as they change and we do not sell the product on this page.
The steps, as Bosch UK and Singapore give them
These are the only descaling steps we found on Bosch pages. Neither is a UAE page.
Before you start
- Check there is no E19 or other heating code on the display. A descale is a hot programme. Do not use one to test a machine that is faulty.
- Check the pack. Use the Bosch descaler, and read the label on the pack before the step.
- Take out all laundry. Both the UK and Singapore pages start with an empty machine.
The sequence
| Step | Bosch UK | Bosch Singapore |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Make sure the machine is empty | Empty the machine and remove all laundry |
| 2 | Open the detergent drawer and pour the entire contents of the Quick Descaler into the drum | Pour the entire contents of the Quick Descaler into the empty drum |
| 3 | Close the drawer. Select a 60 °C programme with no pre-wash and run it to the end | Select a 60 °C programme with pre-wash off, start it, and let it run to completion |
| 4 | Run the same programme again without the descaler to remove residue | Not listed on the page we read |
Two points that are easy to misread
- Drawer or drum? The UK step mentions the drawer and the drum together, and Singapore says drum. We read the UK step through a summary of the page, so confirm the compartment from your pack label or booklet.
- Pre-wash. Both pages say no pre-wash. Neither gives a reason.
What neither page says
- A dose in grams or millilitres. Both say use the entire contents of the pack.
- Which compartment of a particular model to avoid.
- Whether to use a different programme if your machine has no 60 °C setting.
- How hot the water gets for how long.
- What to do if the programme stops part-way.
For these, the booklet and the pack label are the sources.
After the run
Bosch UK's fourth step is a second run to clear residue. If you follow only Singapore's three steps, we would still run a short rinse, as a precaution of ours and not Bosch's, since the pack label may call for it. Then open the door, wipe the seal and the drawer recess, and leave the door ajar to dry.
What Bosch does not say
Owners ask these questions and the sources leave them open.
How much descaler
"How much descaler to use in a Bosch washing machine" is the question people type most. Bosch UK and Singapore answer with the entire contents of one pack, and that is the only quantity on a Bosch page we read. The UAE pages give no quantity. If your pack is different from the UK Quick Descaler, the pack label sets the dose.
Whether the UAE has its own steps
We found no Bosch UAE page with a descaling sequence. The UAE pages we read are short and refer you to the Authorized Service Center for the products. The Singapore and UK sequence is the closest Bosch gives. We cannot tell you Bosch UAE would give the same.
Whether there is a video
Bosch Ireland's page says "please follow the instructions in the video", but the link goes to the cleaning products category, not to a video. We could not find the video there.
Which programme if you have no 60 °C
Bosch says 60 °C. Some machines list 60 °C only under certain programmes. We do not know of a Bosch statement about a substitute.
How to tell it worked
No Bosch page lists a sign that the descale worked. The simplest check is the one you can see: a cleaner door seal and drawer recess, and, as our own check, a hot cycle that runs to its normal length.
Vinegar, citric acid and other household products
Every Bosch page we read that mentions household descalers says not to use them.
| Bosch site | Wording |
|---|---|
| UAE, citric acid page | "Avoid using citric acid!" |
| Singapore | "We strongly advise against using household products that contain acid or vinegar to descale your washing machine." They "can damage the rubber parts of the machine" |
| Egypt | "We advise you not to descale your washing machine with household products that contain acid or vinegar." They "can attack the rubber parts of the machine" |
| US | Do not use citric acid or vinegar. They "may degrade the rubber parts of your machine over time" |
| UAE, smell pages | Vinegar is not recommended because it damages rubber parts |
What this means
Four Bosch sites give the same reason: rubber parts. The door seal and hoses are rubber, and the pages do not list which parts they mean. We therefore do not list them either.
Why the advice is worth following even if it is not what you read online
Home-remedy pages often recommend vinegar or citric acid because they are cheap and sold everywhere. We cannot say they would not clean the scale. Bosch's pages say they put rubber parts at risk, and a leaking seal is a repair we see. If you have already used one, no Bosch page we read calls a single use a fault. Our suggestion is to run a rinse, wipe the seal and look for damage over the following weeks.
Our position
We recommend you follow Bosch on this. If your machine is outside warranty and you decide differently, that is your choice. We cannot tell you what a given product does to your seal, and Bosch's pages do not give us a safe dilution.
Which product: the numbers differ by country
Bosch lists different product numbers for the same job. The numbers below are as quoted on each page.
| Bosch site | Product named | Number |
|---|---|---|
| UAE | Quick descaler | 00311920 |
| UAE | Economy pack of 4 | 00311924 |
| UAE (smell pages) | Washing machine cleaner | 00311927 |
| UK | Quick Descaler, 4 pack (the Bosch US listing for the same number is titled for dishwashers and washing machines) | 00312331 |
| UK | Washing Machine Cleaner | 00311925 |
| UK | Machine cleaner value pack | 00312518 |
| US | Bosch Descaler | 00311918 |
| US | Bosch Washer Cleaner | 00311925 |
Descaler against cleaner
These are two products, and the Bosch US page separates them: the descaler is for limescale and hard water deposits, and the washer cleaner is for greasy residue that can leave spots on laundry. The Bosch UAE pages use "descaler" on some pages and "cleaner" on others, and the interval for the cleaner is the same three months. Read the label to see which one you hold.
Do not guess from a number
A number from a UK page is not a promise it is sold here. Bosch UAE tells you to order cleaning and care products through the Authorized Service Center, and we are not that. Ask for the UAE number, and read the label for the instructions.
What we do not know
We do not know which of these Bosch sells in the UAE at the moment, what it costs, or whether packs sold through other shops are the same product. We will not guess.
Limescale filters and detergent
A limescale filter
Bosch UAE says: "Bosch doesn't offer limescale filters for washing machines." The same page gives descaling every three months as the most cost effective solution. We do not know whether third-party filters are compatible with a Bosch machine, and Bosch's pages say nothing about them. Ask a Bosch customer service line whether fitting one affects your warranty.
The detergent half of the advice
Bosch UAE, Singapore, Australia and Egypt all pair descaling with detergent: use sufficient detergent. Bosch Singapore and Australia say to follow the detergent maker's dosage. Bosch Egypt says following the detergent maker's instructions avoids unnecessary limescale build-up, which fits the WAB28060GB manual's wording.
What "sufficient" means depends on your load, your water and your product. The dosage table on the pack is the sourced answer. Our detergent guide shows how Bosch's manuals handle it, including the i-DOS figures, and where the sources conflict.
Fabric softener and the drawer
We found no Bosch descaling page that discusses softener. Do not mix it with the descaler. This is our caution and not a Bosch rule.
Dubai water
How hard is Dubai tap water, and should that change your routine? We only have a secondary figure.
What we found
A coffee seller's article, citing DEWA's Sustainability Report 2025, gives a typical total hardness of 60.7 mg/L, which is about 3.4 °dH, against a specification of 40 to 120 mg/L. We could not open DEWA's report to check it. Sellers of softeners quote 120 to 400 mg/L, with no public data we could find. If the secondary figure holds, the mains water is soft. We treat that as unconfirmed.
What can change it at your tap
The water in a flat reaches the machine through a building tank and pipes, and may pass a filter or a softener. A villa with a softener will see different water from an apartment without one. We cannot know your water from here.
How to find out
A water hardness test strip is the practical check. Our coffee machine descaling guide describes Bosch US's test strip and the 21 °dH reference on that page. A strip reading at your tap tells you more than any city-wide figure, and it can settle the three-month or yearly question for you.
What it means for the interval
If the figure we found is right, scale builds slowly, and the longer interval is easier to defend. Bosch's pages do not tie an interval to a hardness value. The honest answer is to test, descale on the longer interval, and shorten it if you find crust.
After descaling, and when it is a repair
What to look for
- The hot cycle runs to its normal length.
- The seal and drawer recess are free of white crust.
- The laundry is clean at 40 °C and 60 °C.
What a descale cannot fix
A descale does not repair a failed element. If your machine has stopped heating, or shows E19 or F19, a descale will not clear the code, and Bosch's pages do not say whether another hot run is safe on a machine showing it, so we would not try. Bosch UK and Singapore tell you not to repair a heating fault yourself. See our E19 guide for what Bosch's pages say about it.
Other codes that are not scale
- A drain fault: E18 and the pump filter guide.
- A motor fault: F21, a code the Bosch pages we read do not list.
- A fill fault: E17.
When to book
Book if the machine shows a heating code, if cold-drum cycles continue after a descale, or if you find a leak at the door seal. A scaled element is something a technician tests with instruments, and the visit includes the AED 99 inspection, credited if you go ahead. For the full list of Bosch washing machine faults, see our Bosch washing machine repair page.
Reading a descaler pack before you use it
Because the Gulf pages give no steps, the pack in your hand is the document that matters. Before the programme starts, find these seven things on the label or in the leaflet.
- The Bosch name and the product number. Compare it with the numbers in the table above, and write it down.
- The dose. UK and Singapore say the entire pack. If your label gives a different amount, follow the label.
- The compartment. Drum, drawer or a particular chamber.
- The programme and temperature. Bosch UK and Singapore say 60 °C with no pre-wash.
- Any second run. Bosch UK lists a rinse run without powder.
- The warnings. Gloves, eye contact, children, storage. The Bosch web pages we read list none, so the label is the only source.
- The date or batch, if printed, so you can match a problem to a pack.
If the label and a web page disagree, the label wins, since it is written for that product.
Descale, clean, or something else?
Several jobs get called "descaling" in search results. Bosch's pages treat them as different, and a wrong fix wastes a cycle.
| What you notice | What Bosch's pages point to | Where to go |
|---|---|---|
| White crust on the seal, drawer or glass | Limescale. Descaler on a 60 °C programme | The steps above |
| Spots or greasy residue on laundry | The US page names the Washer Cleaner for greasy residue | The product table above |
| A musty smell | Bosch UAE: wash at 60 °C or higher, use the right amount of detergent, use the washing machine cleaner | Our door seal page |
| Water left in the drum | A drain fault, not scale | E18 and the pump filter guide |
| Cold drum, long cycles, or E19 | A heating question | E19 |
| Powder left in the drawer | A dosing or water question | The detergent guide |
On smells
Bosch UAE's pages on odour give three steps: wash at 60 °C or higher, use the right amount of detergent, and use the Bosch washing machine cleaner. The manuals we read also describe an empty Cottons 90 °C run for odour. None of the pages we read uses a descaler for smell, so do not treat the two jobs as one.
On residue
A white powder on dark laundry can be detergent residue and not scale. We have no Bosch page to cite for telling them apart, so check the dose before you descale.
Questions to put to Bosch Customer Service
Because the Gulf pages leave several points open, a short call can save a wasted cycle. Bosch UAE's pages give +971 600 522 553 as the service number and BSH 048030400 in a support note, and we have seen both, so confirm which one is live for you.
- Which descaling interval applies to my model, three months or once a year?
- Which product number do you recommend for my model in the UAE?
- Should the powder go in the drum or the drawer for my machine?
- May I run the cleaner and the descaler in the same week?
- Does your pack carry its own steps, and will you send them?
Note the date, the name of the person you speak to and the answer. Bosch's own pages say to order the products through the Authorized Service Center, so ask the same call for the order route.
A short record of your descales
A line in your phone is enough, and it helps if a heating problem comes up later.
| Date | Product and number | Programme | Second run? | Anything unusual |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Two uses. If a technician is called for a heating fault, a record shows the machine has been cared for, which helps the conversation about causes. And if you change your interval after a hardness test, you can see what changed.
What a technician looks at when scale is suspected
This section is our practice and is not drawn from a Bosch page.
- The heating element and its surroundings. Because Bosch UK and Singapore name the element, it is where we start when a machine has stopped heating. We test it with instruments and look at the connection.
- The door seal and the drawer. Crust here is visible and tells us how the machine has been used.
- The detergent history. We ask what you use and in what dose, because Bosch's pages tie the two together.
- The water. We ask whether the building has a softener or a filter at the mains.
We do not strip a machine to look for scale unless a symptom points there, and we say what we found on the quote. A scaled element is a repair, not a cleaning job. If the quote names a part, the part number appears on your invoice.
Maintenance, in practice
Bosch's pages give a short routine, and we have put it in one place. Items marked with a country are Bosch's. Items marked "ours" are our suggestions.
| Task | How often | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Dose detergent to the pack's table | Every wash | Bosch UAE, Singapore, Australia |
| Run the descaler, 60 °C, no pre-wash | 3 to 6 months, or per your booklet | Bosch UK, Singapore, UAE |
| Wash at 60 °C or higher | From time to time | Bosch UAE smell pages |
| Wash cleaner (00311927 on the UAE pages) | Every 3 months | Bosch UAE smell pages |
| Wipe the door seal and drawer recess | After wet loads | Ours |
| Clean the pump filter | See our filter guide | Ours and Bosch Gulf pages |
| Leave the door ajar | After the last wash of the day | Ours |
A note on the cleaner and the descaler together
The UAE smell pages recommend the cleaner every three months, and the UAE limescale pages recommend the descaler every three months. They are not the same product. We could not find a Bosch page saying whether to run both in one session or to alternate. Ask Bosch Customer Service, or check the packs, before you run them back to back.
A maintenance plan
We offer maintenance plans for Bosch appliances. Ask for the details when you book a visit. We have not set a price on this page.
Choosing a routine for your household
Bosch gives a range, and these are our suggestions for placing yourself inside it. None comes from a Bosch page.
A machine you bought new
Start the log on the day it is installed. Dose to the pack's table from the first wash, since the WAB28060GB manual ties the need to descale to dosing. Descale for the first time at the end of the longest interval you are comfortable with, and look at the seal and the drawer recess before you do. If they are clean, the longer interval is working for your water.
A machine in a rented flat, or one with no history
You do not know when it was last descaled, or with what. Check the seal and the drawer recess for crust, ask the landlord or previous tenant if there is a record, and run one descale on Bosch's UK and Singapore sequence. Note the date. If the machine shows E19 or F19 before you have done anything, tell the landlord and book service, as Bosch's pages say the owner cannot fix it.
A household that washes mostly cold
Bosch UAE says to wash at 60 °C or higher from time to time. A machine that only ever runs 30 °C programmes rarely asks its heating circuit to work, which is how a heating fault stays hidden until a hot cycle fails. That is our observation from visits. The descale run is itself a 60 °C programme, so it doubles as that hot wash, though no Bosch page says so.
A machine that has just had a heating repair
Ask the technician. If the element was replaced because of scale, the question of interval and product is worth settling on the same visit. We write the part found on the quote, and you can ask what the water was doing.
A worked year
Take a household in an apartment on the six-month middle path described above, with a log in the phone.
| When | What | Source of the step |
|---|---|---|
| January | Descale: empty drum, whole pack, 60 °C, no pre-wash, second run | Bosch UK, Singapore |
| January | Wipe the seal and the drawer recess | Ours |
| April | Washing machine cleaner, per its label | Bosch UAE smell pages (every 3 months) |
| July | Descale again, and record the date | Bosch UK, Singapore |
| October | Washing machine cleaner | Bosch UAE smell pages |
| Any time | Pump filter check | Our filter guide |
This is an illustration. The UAE pages say every three months for both products, so a stricter household would double the entries. Bosch's UAE pages do not say whether to alternate the two, which is why the question list above includes it.
Safety
Descaling is a hot programme with a chemical in the drum.
- Keep the pack out of reach of children and pets.
- Read the label for hand and eye warnings, since none of the Bosch pages we read lists any.
- Do not open the door during the programme. The Bosch manuals we read warn the door can become very hot.
- Do not mix products.
- Do not open panels, test wiring or touch the element.
If anything smells of burning or the electrics trip, switch off at the wall and call.
Frequently asked questions
How do I descale a Bosch washing machine?
Bosch UK and Singapore give the same steps: empty the drum, put the entire contents of the Bosch Quick Descaler in the drum, run a 60 °C programme with no pre-wash to the end, and, on the UK page, run the programme again without the powder to remove the residue.
How much descaler do I use?
The entire contents of one pack, per Bosch UK and Singapore. The UAE pages give no quantity, so the label on your pack is the source.
How often should I descale?
Bosch UAE says every 3 months on two pages and once a year on a third. Bosch UK and Singapore say 3 to 6 months. New Zealand says 6 months. Bosch says the right interval depends on water hardness and detergent.
Does Bosch UAE have its own descaling steps?
We found none. The UAE pages give a frequency, a product number and a warning against citric acid.
Can I use vinegar or citric acid?
Bosch's UAE, Singapore, Egypt and US pages say not to, because acid can damage the rubber parts.
Is there a limescale filter for a Bosch washing machine?
Bosch UAE says Bosch does not offer one.
Do I need to descale if I dose my detergent correctly?
The WAB28060GB manual says descaling should not be necessary with correct dosing. Bosch's web pages still recommend a regular interval. We have only that one manual's wording.
How hard is Dubai water?
The only figure we found is a secondary one, a typical 60.7 mg/L (about 3.4 °dH) citing DEWA, which we could not verify. A test strip at your tap is better evidence.
Will descaling fix E19?
No. Bosch's E19 pages say heating time exceeded and that the owner cannot fix it. Do not run a descale as a test on a machine showing the code.
Which product number should I buy?
The numbers differ by country. Bosch UAE names 00311920 for the quick descaler and 00311924 for the four-pack. Check the label and ask the Authorized Service Center.
Should I descale a washer-dryer the same way?
We found no Bosch page for it. Our washer-dryer guide says the wash side generally follows the washing machine guidance, and the booklet for your model decides.
